Why You're Always Bloated—Even When You Eat 'Clean'

You’ve swapped fast food for smoothies, added kale to your meals, and drink lemon water like it’s your job. But your stomach? Still bloated, puffy, and uncomfortable. What gives?
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and no, you’re not doing anything wrong.
As a Holistic Health Coach and Gut Health Specialist, I work with millennial women every day who are eating all the "right" things... and still feel bloated, sluggish, and stuck. Here's the truth:
Eating healthy doesn’t always mean eating gut-friendly.

Let’s dig into why your “clean” eating might be secretly sabotaging your digestion—and what to do instead.
1. You’re Eating Too Much Fiber (Too Fast)
Fiber is great—until your gut isn’t ready for it.
When you suddenly increase your fiber intake with raw veggies, grains, or legumes, it can overwhelm your digestive system. This leads to gas, bloating, and discomfort, especially if your gut bacteria are out of balance.
Try this: Cook your veggies, blend your greens, and slowly work up to higher fiber foods so your body can adapt.
2. You’re Eating in a Rush or While Stressed
Even the healthiest meals won’t digest properly if your nervous system is in fight-or-flight mode. When you eat on the go, at your desk, or while scrolling TikTok, your body isn’t focused on digestion—it’s on survival mode.
Try this: Before each meal, take 3 deep breaths. Put your phone away. Sit down and eat slowly.
3. Your Gut Microbiome Is Out of Balance
A healthy gut has a diverse mix of good bacteria to help you break down food, absorb nutrients, and prevent bloating. But stress, antibiotics, processed foods, or too many food restrictions can throw it off.
Try this: Incorporate probiotic-rich foods (like sauerkraut or kefir), reduce sugar, and focus on variety—not perfection.
4. You’re Combining Foods That Ferment
Some food combos (like fruit after a heavy meal or raw salads with beans) are more likely to ferment in the gut, causing gas and bloating.
Try this: Eat fruit on an empty stomach, avoid overloading meals with too many high-FODMAP ingredients, and experiment with smaller portions.
